Installing a home EV charging station: from first call to first charge

Not one visit but a short sequence with decisions at fixed points. Here is the order, and which parts of it belong to you.

The numbers behind this query say something before the article starts: 2,900 searches a month at $14.51 a click, on a competition index of 0.23. Advertisers pay heavily for a person typing these words because that person is not browsing, they are about to hire. What follows is the sequence they are about to enter, told from the homeowner’s side of it, with the decision points marked. What is being installed, in plain terms, is a wall unit and a dedicated circuit.

First contact: questions, not a truck

The project starts with four answers that cost nothing: where the property is, where the car actually parks, where the electrical panel is, and whether a second electric vehicle is plausible. A photo of the open panel is worth more than any of them. Nobody serious gives a firm price on less than this, and a firm price offered sight unseen is the first red flag of the trade.

The survey, which is where the price becomes real

Someone stands in front of the panel, performs a load calculation, and walks the route from the panel to the parking space, recording what the route passes through. Drywall, brick, a finished ceiling, a driveway: each obstacle is a line on the quote, and seeing them in advance is the difference between a price and an estimate. What the route can look like is laid out under location and cable run.

The scope in writing, and the choices that are yours

The survey becomes a document: breaker size, conductor size, the route, what is included and what is excluded. Two decisions in it belong to you rather than to us. Hardwired or a 240-volt outlet, which is a question of whether the unit stays with the house. And whether to provision for a second vehicle now, which costs a fraction of doing the whole job twice later.

The permit, where your jurisdiction requires one

Adding a circuit to the fixed wiring of a building would be permitted work in most United States jurisdictions, and where it is, the contractor pulls the permit and books the inspection. From your side this stage is invisible except in the calendar. It is also the stage that separates an installation from a liability: the sequencing detail is on permits and planning.

Installation day

The visible part, and usually the least eventful. The circuit is built from the panel to the parking space, the unit is mounted where the cable reaches the charging port of the parked car, and the breaker is labelled. If trenching or wall work is in the scope, this is where it happens, and because it was in the scope, it surprises nobody.

Your part of the day is small but real: the car should be present so the cable reach can be checked against the actual charging port, the panel should be accessible with nothing stored in front of it, and whoever can make a small decision on the spot should be reachable. Those three preparations are what keep a one-visit installation at one visit.

Inspection and commissioning

Where an inspection is required it examines exactly the details that matter under continuous load: conductor sizing, terminations, protection, the dedicated circuit. Commissioning then configures the unit to the breaker behind it and runs a full test charge on your actual car, with the settings recorded in the handover. A unit that was never commissioned is a unit nobody can troubleshoot later.

What can stretch the schedule, and what cannot

Three things stretch projects: trenching to a detached building, panel work when capacity is genuinely short, and anyone’s approval that was assumed rather than obtained. None of the three is discovered on installation day when the survey was done properly, which is the whole argument for the sequence above.
