What a full EV charger installation service covers, from survey to first charge

One party responsible from the first question to the commissioning report. Here is what that actually includes, at a house and at a small business.

The plural in this query does the talking. At 480 searches a month and $26.33 a click, it is asked by people who are not shopping for a device, they are shopping for someone to take responsibility for the whole thing. Fair enough. Here is what the whole thing is, stage by stage, so that a proposal can be checked against it.

What “service” means here

One party answerable from the first question to the commissioning report. Not a device shipped, an electrician found separately and a permit left to whoever remembers. Everything below is one scope, one schedule and one point of contact, and when something on site is not as assumed, the same party absorbs the surprise and re-plans.

It starts with questions, not a truck

Before anyone visits: where the property is, where the vehicle or vehicles park, where the panel is, and what the electricity is for, a family car, a small fleet, employees, or customers. Those answers decide whether the project is one circuit or an infrastructure, and they cost nothing to give.

The site survey

Then someone stands in front of the panel. The survey establishes the spare capacity by calculation, walks the route from panel to parking, and records what the route passes through. At a house that takes under an hour. At a commercial site it also covers the service entrance, metering, and how many bays should be provisioned now versus wired later, which is the central planning question of commercial charging.

A scope in writing

The survey becomes a document: circuit sizes, the route, hardwired or receptacle, equipment mounting, what is included, what is excluded, and what would change the price. A scope you can hold is the difference between a service and a favour. It is also what makes two competing proposals comparable at all.

Permits, scheduling and the utility

Where the jurisdiction requires a permit, and for fixed wiring most would, the service pulls it, books the inspection and handles any notification the utility expects before a new continuous load appears on its network. This is sequencing work more than paperwork, and it is the stage where a project gains or loses weeks. The order that avoids doing anything twice is laid out in permits and planning.

Installation day and commissioning

The visible part: the circuit is built, the unit is mounted where the cable reaches the port of a parked car, and then commissioning, which is the part most often skipped by loose arrangements. Output matched to the breaker, network features configured, a full test charge on the actual vehicle, and the settings recorded in the handover. A unit that was never commissioned is a unit nobody can troubleshoot later.

Where a house and a small business differ

At a house the project is one circuit and the design questions are geometric; the residential specifics are covered in the house guide. At a workplace or a small commercial site, the design question is sharing: several vehicles, a finite service, and load management dividing the available capacity between the bays that are actually drawing. Shared buildings add a layer of consent and metering on top: that is the subject of getting a charger into an apartment garage, and of multifamily charging.

After the crew leaves

The service is not over at the last cable tie. The handover includes the documentation and the inspection record where one exists, which is also the evidence rebate programs pay against, plus a named contact for the day something reads wrong on the unit. That last item is cheap to promise and rare to get in writing, which is exactly why it is worth asking for.
