Electrical panel upgrade services: what a proper engagement includes, from load calculation to final inspection
The plural means the person is not shopping for a panel. They are shopping for someone to own the whole thing, from arithmetic to sign-off. Here is what the whole thing is.
Three phrasings share these numbers: 320 searches a month, $17.97 a click, and a competition index of 0.02, the lowest in the entire pull for a query advertisers pay that much for. The plural, as with any services query, means the person is not shopping for a panel. They are shopping for someone to own the whole thing, from arithmetic to sign-off. Here is what the whole thing is, so that any proposal, ours included, can be checked against it.
It begins with a calculation, shown
The engagement opens with a load calculation, done to the method in the code edition your jurisdiction enforces, and shown to you with its inputs. This is not a formality. Its result is what tells you whether the upgrade is needed at all, or whether a lower charger setting or a load management device would serve, which is the distinction explained in what a panel upgrade is and when a charger needs one. A service that starts with a rating rather than a calculation has started at the wrong end.
A survey of the service entrance
Then someone stands in front of the meter and the panel. The survey records the existing rating and the condition of the equipment, the meter base, the service conductors and whether they can carry the target rating, the grounding electrode system, the clearances around the panel, and the route any new conductors would take. At a house with a charger in the plan, it also walks the run from the new panel to the parking space, so that both circuits are designed in one pass.
A scope in writing
The survey becomes a document: the target rating and why; what equipment is replaced and what stays; whether the panel moves; whether an exterior disconnect is added; what the utility is expected to do and what it is expected to charge for; which walls are opened and who closes them; what is excluded; and what would change the price. A scope you can hold is what makes two competing proposals comparable at all.
Utility coordination
The utility owns the connection and controls the disconnection and the re-energising. A proper service applies to the utility for the new rating where the utility requires it, agrees the date of the outage, and confirms whether the meter base, the drop or the lateral fall to the utility or to the contractor. This is the stage where projects gain or lose the most time, and it is the stage most often left to the homeowner in a thin quote.
Permit, inspection and the release
Where the jurisdiction requires a permit for service equipment, and for this work most would, the service pulls it, schedules the inspection and attends it. With many utilities the release to re-energise at the new rating follows the inspection rather than preceding it, so the order of those steps is part of the plan, not an afterthought. The full sequencing logic is on permits and planning.
Installation day
The house is without power while the old equipment comes out and the new goes in. Every existing circuit is re-landed and labelled, grounding and bonding are brought to the current edition, the new panel is set with breaker positions left for what is planned, and, where the charger circuit is part of the scope, that circuit is built and the unit commissioned in the same visit, as described in what a full charger installation service covers.
What is handed over
A panel directory that matches reality. The load calculation, in writing. The permit and the inspection record where one exists. The utility’s paperwork. The equipment documentation. And a named contact for the day something reads wrong. Those documents are what a buyer’s inspector, an insurer or a rebate administrator will ask for years later, and they cost nothing to produce at the time and a great deal to reconstruct afterwards.
What a thin quote leaves out
The calculation, the utility, the permit, the wall repair, and the charger circuit, in roughly that order of frequency. A quote that is a single number and a rating has left all five to be discovered, and each one arrives as a change order or as a job you now have to arrange yourself. Whoever you engage, ask for the license number and the insurance certificate and check them with the issuing bodies; we expect the same question and will send our documents on request. Then ask for the scope in writing, and read it against this page.
